2011 Porsche Panamera 4 ? Short Take Road Test
Sticking a 3.6-liter V-6 engine into the Porsche Panamera?s ample frame would seem to be as good a performance recipe as chopping off a couple of engines from a Boeing 747, but in reality the base Panamera is still plenty fast. [...]

Jimmie Johnson's Third Place Increases His Championship Lead

CONCORD, N.C. -- It may have been a familiar car up front in Saturday's Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but it was hardly just another hum-drum NASCAR championship effort.Jimmie Johnson finished third behind winner Jamie McMurray and the night's most dominant driver, Kyle Busch, and still extended his NASCAR Sprint Cup championship lead to 41 points over second place Denny Hamlin. Most disconcerting to his competition is the fact the four-time defending series champ scored the finish despite an early race spin, pit road collision and uncharacteristic pit stop bobble.
"Ah, Superman; he woke up,'' Busch said at one point midway through the race while exchanging the lead with Johnson, who had just overcome a series of early race setbacks.
With five races remaining in NASCAR's 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs, Johnson has clearly established himself as the odds-on favorite, man-to-beat for an unprecedented and unthinkable fifth consecutive title.
"We've had a little more drama in this situation than we would have wanted to,'' Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus offered Saturday night. Yet somehow, even nights like this haven't derailed his title hopes in the least.

Japanese automakers revise earnings estimates on strength of Yen
Filed under: Japan, Nissan, Toyota, Earnings/Financials
Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, has stated that the Japanese automaker is planning to revise its earnings forecast due to the fact that the Yen has reached a 15-year high. The full-year profit forecast was based on a rate of 90 Yen to the US Dollar. It will be reduced to around 80 Yen to USD. The Yen has risen 15 percent against the USD and 13 percent against the Euro, which is not good for a company that has to repatriate earnings from its overseas sales.
Earlier this year, the rising Yen created concerns that Akio Toyoda would be forced to shutter some assembly plants. Toyoda assured the public that plants would not be closing, however more vehicle assembly is being shipped to overseas factories.
Toyota is not alone in making this move. Nissan has stated that it is looking at doing a revision of earnings as well as finding more locally sourced parts to aid overseas production.

Porsche upgrades world's best-selling racing car with new RS-based 911 GT3 Cup
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Porsche, Racing
As many Porsche 911s as you think you might see at the golf course, yacht club or shopping mall, that's nothing compared to the legions regularly running around racing circuits worldwide. Aside from the myriad open GT grids dominated by Stuttgart machinery, the iconic German sportscar is the spec racer of choice for various national Porsche Carrera Cup championships and the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup that supports F1 races around the year. Those series use the versatile 911 GT3 Cup. With over 1,400 sold since 1998, Porsche maintains that it's the best-selling racing car of all time, and it has just announced a new model for the 2011 season onward.
Whereas the outgoing Cup racer was based on the street-going 911 GT3, the new model starts life as the harder, faster and sharper GT3 RS. That means a wider body that can accommodate bigger wheels, tires and brakes. It also carries the larger 3.8-liter flat-six with 450 horsepower - 30 more horses than the outgoing model coming from 200cc of added displacement. It also looks more like the RS, with an aggressive aero package and LED lighting for when tracks go dark and dreary.
The 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will make its track debut at the opening round of next season's Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship, but you can delve into the details right now in the press release after the jump and in our high-res image gallery below.

But Kahne was a lame duck at RPM, and he and longtime crew chief Kenny Francis had previously announced their intentions to race for Red Bull Racing in 2011 as a stopover point before Kahne's move to Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 car in 2012.

Danica Patrick Warns NASCAR Drivers She's No Pushover
Filed under: Danica Patrick, NASCAR
CONCORD, N.C. -- A week ago, Danica Patrick was wrecked while in the midst of what would have been her best NASCAR finish -- an unnecessary victim of bullying as far as she was concerned.
So this week, Patrick warned the guilty party, fellow rookie James Buescher, that he better not push the issue in Friday night's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
"I think it's pretty safe to say I'm not going to make it my mission to take him out because I don't want to do anything to take away from my race,'' said Patrick, who will be making her ninth start in Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet.
"But if he, in any way, starts to act up out there, yeah, I'm going to do something about it.''
"I hope that he thinks about what he did last weekend. If he plays well with others then you know we'll be able to carry on. But if he doesn't, there's going to be a need for something to happen because you can't get pushed around out there. You can't.''
Patrick was referring to an accident with nine laps remaining in last Saturday's race in Fontana, Calif., when she was on pace for her first top-15 finish. While running 14th in a tight pack of cars she was hit from behind by Buescher, ending her day while he went on and finished 17th.

Tony Stewart's Winning Week in His Own Words
Filed under: Tony Stewart, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR
Editors Note: FanHouse is teaming up with two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart for weekly, in-depth stories as he competes in the 10-week Chase for the Sprint Cup. Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet, enters Saturday night's race at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- the fifth of the 10 playoff races -- ranked fifth in the standings, 107 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson. On Friday, FanHouse caught up with Stewart in his motor coach just before the start of final practice. Here's his personal account of a busy week starting with his second victory of the season Sunday in Fontana, Calif., followed by a major press conference Tuesday when he announced that Mobil 1 will be a primary sponsor of his car for 11 races in 2011.CONCORD, N.C. -- We didn't get in a big hurry to leave (Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif). Probably the coolest part was I thanked all the guys and came back to the motor coach and (co-owner) Gene's (Haas) motor home was parked right next to mine.
Gene and his family were still outside and they had their own personal cameras out and they were taking pictures of the scoring pylon and it had 200 laps at the top and the running order under it.
That's the stuff that makes you feel good. I've never seen Gene have a camera in his hand, let alone his entire family. That just shows you how big a moment it was for him personally. And for me, that was the icing on the cake. That's what meant the most to me.

Car and Driver grades industry's car designers [w/poll]
C/D graded 20 automakers in all, giving out four As, 11 Bs, two Cs, a D and two grades of incomplete. Ferrari got a top score thanks to the intensely hot-looking 458 Italia. Jaguar/Land Rover also came up big for hits like the new XJ, while more mainstream General Motors and Kia each managed an A thanks to their leaps in design quality.
Volvo and Mazda were each given an incomplete thanks to some very recent changes at the top of their respective design management teams. Toyota/Lexus came up short, receiving the only D of the group, prompting author Phil Patton to ask if there were recalls for dullness. Ouch. Head over to Car and Driver for all the design grades, and follow the jump for a poll on the best designs for a mainline manufacturer.

Driving champions David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett and team owner Bud Moore were named as the second class of inductees into NASCAR's Hall of Fame on Wednesday afternoon during a ceremony at the Grand Hall of the year-old shrine in downtown Charlotte.Representing markedly different eras, the new class is comprised of some of the sport's most recognizable names.
Three-time Cup champion David Pearson, who many thought would enter the Hall during its inaugural class, was the first name announced by NASCAR Chairman Brian France (right).
Legendary driver Bobby Allison, the 1983 Cup champ and three-time winner of the Daytona 500, was the next name revealed, followed by the Petty family patriarch and inaugural Daytona 500 winner Lee Petty; Ned Jarrett, a two-time Cup champ (1961, '65) and father of 1999 Cup driving champ Dale Jarrett; and Bud Moore, a three-time Cup champion mechanic and team owner.

Video: 2012 Ford Focus ST hits the road
Filed under: Performance, Videos, Hatchback, Ford
Ford has been so kind as to unleash a video of the Focus ST on the interwebs, giving us all our first glimpse at the hopped-up hatch on open pavement. Don't expect any apex-clipping shots of the five-door going hard over through a set of twisties, though; this video is largely comprised of a lackadaisical romp through the countryside. That's fine, though. Even without any 9/10ths driving action, the Focus ST still looks plenty lust-worthy from our point of view.
Of course, that probably has plenty to do with the fact that this is the first genuine sports-oriented version of the Focus we've even had a whiff of since the mighty Focus SVT went belly up back in 2004. But whereas the SVT brought a mere 170 horsepower to the table, the ST should boast a more heady 247 ponies and 266 lb-ft of torque from an EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-pot.
So long as Ford can slap a decent suspension and tolerable gearbox into the craft, there should be much to love when the car hits our shores in 2012. Hit the jump to have a look for yourself.
