Richard Petty and Investors Take Control of RPM From George Gillett Jr.
Filed under: A.J. Allmendinger, Petty Enterprises, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Richard Petty will once again run his race team and participate in day-to-day operations as chairman of the new ownership group that was announced Monday. The assets of Richard Petty Motorsports have been sold from George Gillett Jr. to an investment group that consists of Petty, Medallion Financial Corp. and DGP Investments.
"Today is a great day for me, my family, our fans and our wonderful sponsors," Petty said in a statement that listed 10 partners that "have supported me through thick and thin and I thank them from the bottom of my heart."
RPM will field cars for AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose in 2011.
The transfer of assets has been in the works for several weeks because of Gillett's ongoing financial problems. Debt-laden English soccer club Liverpool recently was sold despite the objection of Gillett and business partner Tom Hicks. And a U.S. hedge fund is suing Gillett over what the firm says is more than $117 million in debt he racked up investing in Liverpool.

Paefgen retiring at Bentley, Drheimer appointed chairman and CEO
Filed under: Europe, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Bentley
The game of game of CEO musical chairs at Volkswagen is still underway. Wolfgang Dürheimer (at right), formerly executive vice president of Porsche, is now the chairman and CEO of Bentley. Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen (above), the company's current CEO, will retire in February after eight years of leading the ultra-lux brand. Though he's hit the traditional German retirement age of 65, the well-regarded exec is slated to stay on the payroll as a consultant for VW and an adviser for Bentley.
Dürheimer, 52, has a long history in the automotive and motorcycle worlds. He joined up with BMW in 1986 and held lead roles in product development for the Roundel's two-wheeled operation as well as research and development for the company's passenger car division before moving to Porsche in 1999. While there, he helmed the 911 line before heading up research and development for the sportscar maker.

Porsche has officially confirmed what's been rumored for at least three years - the German automaker will build a small SUV to slot in below its highly successful Cayenne. With the working name "Cajun," Porsche wants the mini 'ute to provide younger customers another point of entry into the brand.Designer Walter da Silva has apparently taken the lead on the project, which is expected to be loosely based on the Audi Q5, and the press release (available after the jump) claims that the Cajun will have "typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility." Here's hoping... [Source: Porsche]

2012 Mazda5 priced from $19,990, hits dealerships in January
Filed under: Car Buying, Minivan/Van, Mazda
We have quite the soft spot for the Mazda5 mini-minivan. It's a taller, more capacious version of the zippy Mazda3, and it stands totally alone in a class of Americanized small MPVs (until the Ford Grand C-Max arrives on our shores, that is). Mazda has given the 5 a healthy once-over for the 2012 model year, and the automaker has just announced that the swoopy new people-mover will be priced from $19,990 (including destination and delivery).
That sub-$20,000 price point gets you the base Sport model, which has 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, tilt/telescope steering wheel, remote keyless entry and safety features like Dynamic Stability Control and traction control. The $21,990 Touring model adds 17-inch alloys, a five-speed automatic transmission, Bluetooth, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The top-rung Grand Touring ($24,670) will net you a moonroof, automatic xenon headlamps, heated mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, heated leather front seats and an upgraded audio system with Sirius satellite radio.
The entire Mazda5 range is powered by the automaker's 2.5-liter inline-four (found in the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-7) that produces 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Base Sport models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while a five-speed autobox is the only transmission available on Touring and Grand Touring models.
Look for the 2012 Mazda5 to hit dealerships in January of 2011. For the full details, follow the jump for Mazda's press release.

Kevin Harvick Comes Full Circle From Dramatic Cup Debut
Filed under: Kevin Harvick, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Sitting on stage just to the left of his two championship rivals for a final NASCAR championship contenders press conference, Kevin Harvick leaned back in his chair and smiled, listening to Sprint Cup series points leader Denny Hamlin and second place Jimmie Johnson trade barbs and confidently explain how they planned to rise to the occasion in Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. At times they looked awkward and uncomfortable with the situation -- each arguing the other was under greater pressure -- while Harvick, a 46-point third place underdog, couldn't have appeared more settled, looking every bit his nickname, "Happy" Harvick.
Pressure? That was 10 years ago.
"It seems like it has worked backwards for me with coming in and taking over Dale's (Earnhardt) car,'' said Harvick, 35, who was picked by Richard Childress to drive the late seven-time champion's car in the days after Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash in the 2001 Daytona 500.
"You started with the biggest press conference you'll ever be a part of in your whole life. You start with the weight of the world on your shoulders. As it's gone through the years, it's actually gotten easier. It's almost like you've gotten prepared for these situations before you even got started.
"There is no pressure this week. It's so easy, we're having fun, we're relaxed. We realize we have a small deficit to overcome and we've done it throughout the year beating both cars. So we're having fun with it.''

It's Turkey Day, and Autoblog is thankful for...
We here at Autoblog are a mighty thankful bunch, and we really shouldn't need just one day to sit down and consider what it is that we are truly just pleased as pumpkin pie for. But, in case you hadn't noticed, today is, in fact, Thanksgiving here in the good ol' United States of America, and so we've put together this list of what team Autoblog is most grateful for this year - check it out by clicking on the big inflatable bird above.
Of course, this isn't an exhaustive list by any means. For instance, we're all rather grateful that there's still an automotive industry - and perhaps more specifically an American automobile industry - for us to be obsessive about. Most of us are also happy that Top Gear USA has finally gotten off the ground, and we're hopeful that it proves entertaining over the long haul.
Sure, there's more. But we're also interested in knowing what you are most thankful for in 2010. Go ahead, leave us all a note in 'Comments.'

GM to invest $163 million in three plants
Filed under: Etc., Plants/Manufacturing, GM, Earnings/Financials
General Motors is investing $163.2 million three plants as it prepares to ramp up engine production for the Chevrolet Volt, Cruze and a new small Chevrolet. The company's Flint Engine Operations will take home the lion's share of the money, with $138.3 million going to help boost production of the Ecotec turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine used in each of the company's fuel-thrifty cars. Meanwhile, The General's Bay City Components plant will receive $12.7 million and Defiance Castings in Defiance, Ohio will see $12.2 million. All told, GM says that the money will protect 184 jobs across the three manufacturing sites. At the beginning of 2011, the Flint plant will be responsible for producing around 400 engines per day, though GM wants to increase that number to 800 by the end of next year. The Bay City plant is set to increase production of both connecting rods and cam shafts while the Defiance facility will increase its output of crank shafts and engine blocks. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Were you wondering what the Top Gear crew were doing in Israel when they were spotted there last month? Well wonder no more.
Reports from the British Isles are now stating that the tour across the Middle East was actually shot for a Christmas Special in which Clarkson, Hammond and May retrace the steps of the Three Wise Men who, according to Christian lore, visited the Virgin Mary and the Baby Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. Only while the trio of yore did it on camel-back, two millennia later, the team of British auto journos - who may have picked up as many followers today as the Nazarene messiah did in his - rode in across Turkey and Syria in three old roadsters.
Looks like it's going to be a Merry Christmas after all, Charlie Brown.

NASCAR Championship Scenarios as Finish Line Nears for 2010
Filed under: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
Denny Hamlin certainly had plenty of frustration boiling over after late-race strategy failed to work in his favor. So, he took a water bottle and threw it Sunday in Phoenix.
The temperament, however, may be unjustified: Hamlin heads into Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the proverbial driver's seat to win the 2010 crown.
Sure, the Virginia driver is sporting just a 15-point lead and could lose it by finishing second to Jimmie Johnson at Homestead.
But if that happens, Hamlin will be just the third driver in NASCAR's modern points system era to lose the championship in the season's final race. The first was 1979 when Richard Petty beat Darrell Waltrip and the second in 1992 when Alan Kulwicki topped Davey Allison.
Hamlin, however, clinches his fate by simply leading the most laps and finishing second or better. If Hamlin pulls that feat while Jimmie Johnson wins, the two will finish tied in the point standings.

Speeding Penalty Derails Kevin Harvick's NASCAR Title Run
Filed under: Kevin Harvick, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Kevin Harvick and his team owner, Richard Childress, were diplomatic in the moments following Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Diplomatic, but not satisfied. Harvick was not happy.Harvick, who entered the final race in third place in the championship -- 46 points behind Denny Hamlin -- had positioned himself to make a heroic, if unlikely run at his first title, dethroning four-time champ Jimmie Johnson and capitalizing on Hamlin's Sunday afternoon of misfortune.
After racing near the front all day, Harvick exited the pits in first place for a restart on lap 188 of the 267-lap race -- only to be penalized for speeding on pit road (right).
NASCAR said his No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet was too fast entering the pits and he was sent to rear of the lead-lap cars, dropping him back to 29th place. Harvick was understandably livid on the team radio when he received the news and still maintained after the race that he was directly behind a car -- on its bumper -- and therefore couldn't have been speeding.
"I don't think that penalty will ever settle in my stomach,'' Harvick said in a post-race press conference. "When you read me off of my pit road times of 49.6, 49.4 50.8 and then 49.6; and there's only a handful people that get to see them, I won't ever settle for that.
"I don't know how you can be speeding when you're on the bumper in front of you and if the other guy is not speeding. So that's about it. ''

Video: Mercedes-Benz investigates where your eyes wander
Filed under: Sedan, Etc., Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury
Chances are, if we were to ask you what catches a man's eye in the natural world, you wouldn't have to hire a team of researchers to come up with the answer. Of course, odds are that you don't work for Mercedes-Benz, either. The German automaker wanted to discover exactly what it is about its vehicles that snags someone's pupils, so it hired a team of scientists equipped with fancy camera-equipped glasses and unleashed a few unsuspecting test subjects on a quick walk-around the new CLS.
What'd they find? Not surprisingly, our eyes are immediately drawn to traits like the arching roof line, long hood and unique body contours down each flank. Surprise, surprise, we know. And what draws our eye in the opposite sex? Well, we'll just let you watch the video after the jump to figure that one out for yourself. Unlike the CLS, the answer may actually surprise you.
