Mansory gets into the custom bike game with Zapico
Filed under: Aftermarket, Europe, Motorcycle, Specialty
You may know Mansory more for doing terrible things to supercars like the Bugatti Veyron than for motorcycles, but it turns out their gold plating and leather cladding skills know no bounds. To keep things interesting, Mansory has just rolled out a bespoke motorcycle developed with customizer Thomas M. George, and it actually looks pretty good.
The Mansory Zapico has been swathed generously in carbon fiber, as any custom anything must be these days. From the bug shield to the gas tank to the exhaust silencers, no surface has been left untouched. According to the company, the carbon pieces and the wheels of the bike are all hand built in Mansory's factory in Bavaria.
While the Zapico plays up the carbon fiber rather than the company's normal trademark leather work, the seat, while thin, is a one-off leather concoction.
As with any self-respecting chopper, the 124 c.i. V-twin mill comes from famed American engine builder S&S packing 160 horsepower. That's enough grunt to get the big bike to 60 in 3.3 seconds, despite its 750-pound heft. Check it out in our high-res gallery below and read more about it in the press release after the jump.

Koenigsegg Agera R heads to Geneva packing up to 1,115 hp... and a ski box
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Geneva Motor Show, Koenigsegg
When the Geneva Motor Show kicks off this week, the Lamborghini Aventador won't be the only exotic sucking in journos like a tractor beam. The Koenigsegg Agera R is also making its global debut, wearing in a Speed Racer-inspired paint scheme (per the owner's request) and packing so much power that you'd think an R2 unit would be a better co-pilot than, say, Chim-Chim.
Now, about that power - the Agera R's 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 makes a ridiculous 1,115 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque on E85. Fill the tank with 95-octane gasoline instead of the biofuel, and figure on "only" around 940 horses and 811 lb-ft. The V8's connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The driver harnesses that power from a lavishly appointed cockpit that meets all the hypercar techno-fantasy criteria.
The Agera R's body panels are draped over a carbon fiber monocoque whose rigidity is such that a roof is not required. Hence, it's a removable panel that can be stowed inside the car. The owner of the example being displayed in Geneva is a skier, so the car is outfitted with a custom carbon fiber roof box developed in conjunction with Thule. It's a single-piece system that replaces the Agera R's standard roof entirely; when you get to the mountain, you simply swap the ski-box roof for the standard roof (which is tucked away in the cargo compartment).
Other highlights of the Koenigsegg Agera R include Vortex Generating Rim (VGR) wheels whose spokes act as turbine vanes that help maximize downforce. They're wrapped in Michelin rubber developed specifically for the Agera. Said tires are rated up to 260 mph, making them the highest-speed-rated tires in the world, according to Koenigsegg. As always, we'll have a full team in Geneva next week to bring you full details and a live look at the Agera R. In the meantime, check out the high-res image gallery below.

EDAG Light Car Sharing Concept previewed ahead of Geneva Motor Show
Filed under: Concept Cars, Geneva Motor Show, Electric
EDAG is headed back to the Geneva Motor Show with a new take on car sharing. The company plans to unveil the new Light Car Sharing Concept, a machine that blends lightweight composites, modular pieces and an electric drivetrain to solve many of the woes facing communal autos at the moment. Along with body panels and interior components that can be easily swapped out for new pieces as wear and tear take hold, the concept comes with sophisticated GPS tracking software to allow car sharing companies to know exactly where their vehicles are at all times.
EDAG says that this new technology will help make car sharing more efficient in the future. At the heart of the vehicle is an axle-mounted electric drive system powered by lithium-ion batteries. All told, the gear is good for a range of 62 miles and a top-speed of 62 miles per hour. There are no output or acceleration figures to be had as of this writing, though that might change as we get closer to next week's show.

Harry Gant, Hal Needham Live Chat Replay With FanHouse
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- FanHouse senior motorsports writer Holly Cain had another exclusive FanHouse live chat from Daytona International Speedway Saturday, this time with NASCAR legend Harry Gant (above) and stuntman and director Hal Needham.
Needham directed the classic "Smokey and the Bandit" starring Burt Reynolds, and Gant won 18 victories during 22 years of driving in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series from 1973 through 1994. Many of his wins came driving the Skoal Bandit, named after the movie.
Needham, famous in Hollywood for his stunt work before he took up directing, has authored a book on his life, "Stuntman!" that was published Feb. 9.
Below is a replay of the chat.

It's Tony Stewart Again at Daytona in Nationwide Photo Finish

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The venerable Daytona International Speedway may as well be classified a completely new venue for the Nationwide Series this season.
The victory lane celebration, however, remains much the same.
Tony Stewart pushed by Clint Bowyer in the final feet of Saturday's DRIVE4COPD 300 to win his sixth checkered flag of the season-opener in his last seven tries. The winning margin of .007 seconds was the third closest in series history.
"We just got a great run," Stewart said. "We had a good push from Landon Cassill there at the line."
Cassill, a young driver without a full-time ride this season, finished third to take the Nationwide Series' points lead.
The path to success again for Stewart had plenty of reasons to derail this time around.
GM, Chrysler reportedly bail on Tokyo Motor Show
Filed under: Japan, Tokyo Motor Show, Chrysler, Ford, GM
Detroit automakers have never had much success in Japan's closed automotive market. That was no doubt a major contributing factor to the Detroit Three's decision to skip the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009, and at least two of the three apparently won't be back in 2011.
AutoWeek reports that General Motors and Chrysler have announced they will skip Tokyo later this year. Ford hasn't yet officially announced if it plans to participate in the event, and a company spokesperson reportedly told AW that the automaker hasn't "decided where the motor show sits in our priorities." The move makes sense considering weak sales in the country. GM sells only about 2,000 vehicles per year in The Land of the Rising Sun, while Ford reportedly sold 3,047 units in 2010.
The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association claims that most European automakers, including the German luxury makes, will participate in the event.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Edge named Canadian Car and Utility of the Year
Filed under: Sedan, Etc., Crossover, Chevrolet, Ford, Canada
Both Chevrolet and Ford have something to brag about at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada named the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze the Canadian Car of the Year; the 2011 Ford Edge took Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year honors. According to General Motors, AJAC members cited the compact sedan's efficiency, refinement, and price as the key factors, and that added bonuses like 10 standard air bags helped seal the award for the Cruze.
The 2011 Ford Edge crossover, won over journos with its extensive redesign and came out ahead following both road and track tests. Additionally, the Edge's onboard technology features helped drive home the win. Hit the jump for both press releases.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Remembers His Father in His Own Way
Filed under: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Daytona Int'l Speedway, Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The white No. 3 decals are no bigger than a fist and sit just above and behind the driver's side window of all the Richard Childress Racing team's Chevrolets. Crew members wore black baseball caps with the same No. 3 logo and driver Tony Stewart strolled through the Daytona International Speedway garage Friday afternoon clutching one of the prized caps himself.
Friday marked exactly 10 years since the driver of the Richard Childress Racing No. 3, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, was killed in Turn 4 of this track after crashing on the last lap of the Daytona 500. The speedway will remember the NASCAR icon with a moment of silence and fans will hold up three fingers on the third lap of Sunday's Daytona 500.
But for such an overwhelming event, it has been a subdued, subtle and suiting anniversary.
For the past week, Earnhardt's competitors, teammates and friends have shared emotional stories about that fateful Sunday afternoon. But the one person you won't see participate in any contrived memorial this weekend is Earnhardt's son, Dale Jr. No hat, no decal. None necessary.
"I'd personally rather just watch it and stand on the sidelines,'' Earnhardt said of the various tributes and memorials planned for the weekend.
"It's more fun for me hearing how other people reflect, hearing other people's stories. I know how I feel in my heart and I don't feel a real need to discuss that a lot.
"I want to do what's right and honor him, but I don't need to do it in front of a bunch of people. I feel like he carries his own weight and he doesn't need me being a part of the celebration or whatever you want to call it. I don't want to take away from it in any way.''

NASCAR Issues Technical Changes for Safety's Sake
Filed under: Daytona Int'l Speedway, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- As NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams were packing up their equipment from Sunday's Daytona 500 pole qualifying session, NASCAR officials issued a technical bulletin aimed at keeping the cars from the 206-mph, two-car drafts that dominated Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout 75-lap non-points race.
"I thought it was cool at the beginning, medium in the middle and when they hit 206, I wasn't thinking of the race anymore, I was thinking what we needed to do in the next couple days,'' NASCAR Vice President for Competition Robin Pemberton said of Saturday's race,
In response to the increasing speeds and two-car breakaways, NASCAR has regulated the front grill opening on all the cars to 2 1/2-inches by 20-inches and it will install a pressure relief valve in the water cooling system. Pemberton said the idea is to decrease the temperature that the engine water will boil. Some cars could run water as hot as 290-300 degrees. Pemberton would like to get that temperature down to 250 degrees.
Cars shouldn't be able to run in the two-car pack for a sustained period of time for fear of overheating, thus making it less likely they will reach speeds upwards of 200 mph like they did Saturday night.
Although NASCAR did not change the size of the carburetor restrictor plate, Pemberton said that remains an option and didn't rule out other technical changes in advance of the Feb. 20 season-opening Daytona 500. Officials are looking to see what the racing is like in the Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races on Thursday. They issued the technical bulletin Sunday so teams will have a chance to make the necessary changes before NASCAR Speedweeks resumes with a practice session on Wednesday morning.
"The speeds are high because everyone did their job,'' Pemberton told reporters in a nearly abandoned Daytona garage late Sunday afternoon. "The track with the paving, Goodyear, the teams have done a great job and now we're (NASCAR) in the fold and trying to reel some of that back in. And we have the support of the race teams.
"There's a lot of pressure here,'' he continued. "I can't even begin to tell you the pressure from a large group of people that are expecting us to get it right (for the Daytona 500).''

Rinspeed BamBoo frolics in the sunshine ahead of Geneva
Filed under: Concept Cars, Geneva Motor Show, Specialty, Design/Style, Electric
Rinspeed has unleashed a mammoth collection of photos featuring its upcoming BamBoo. We eagerly await spying this grown-up golf-cart (their words) in person at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The photos are heavy on the stylized portrayal of wealthy youth enjoying a summer in Saint-Tropez, yet they reveal little of what's under the BamBoo's skin.
We do know that its German-made 54-kW electric motor will allow speeds of up to 75 miles per hour and that its battery (unknown chemistry) offers 65 miles of range. What's more, it appears that there may be a bicycle or two taking up residence in the rear cargo area. Tech junkies will surely appreciate the included seven-inch (Android-powered?) tablet computer.
The photos are fun to look at (get a load of the inflatable roof that also serves as a beach blanket) and help give us an idea of what to expect when we finally train our own lenses on the real-life version of the BamBoo. In the meantime, feel free to check out the press release after the break.

Bentley sets new land ice speed record
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Etc., Europe, Bentley, Luxury
The Baltic Sea, sitting off the coast of Finland, is a white wasteland of ice and snow during the winter portion of the calendar. Local hero Juha Kankkunen, a four-time World Rally Champion, looks out over that vast expanse and sees a blank slate on which he can make his mark. What exactly is that mark? It's 200 miles per hour... on ice.
Kankkunen is no stranger to going fast over less-than-ideal driving conditions. However, his rally cars never hit 200 mph and he wasn't driving them on 70 centimeters worth of ice, four kilometers away from the Finnish coast. This fast Fin had previously taken a shot at the 200-mph mark, back in 2007 using a Bentley Continental GT. He came up just short, but his official speed of 199.83 mph did shatter the previous ice speed record of 184 mph, which was set in 1995 in a Bugatti EB110 Supersport.
This time around, Kankkunen was piloting the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible, which boasts 621 horsepower under the hood. The only modifications made to the car included a roll-cage, Pirelli winter tires, a rear parachute and some light aero mods to help with stability on the rather slippery surface.
His Bentley gurgling at the start line like a British school boy who just discovered Pop Rocks, Juha Kankkunen pushed the accelerator to the velvety soft carpet of his Supersports ice rocket. One thousand meters later and the world has a new record for driving quickly over ice... 205.48 mph. Onnittelut Juha ja Bentley!
