Video: Harley-Davidson shows how the Captain America movie motorcycle came to be
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Motorcycle, Celebrities
Captain America, the summer blockbuster movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, has officially had the largest opening weekend of any comic-based flick in 2011. Incidentally, it also knocked the latest Harry Potter flick, which opened one week before, out of first place.
But we don't really care about all that. What we're more interested in are all the cool vehicles seen in the film, not the least of which is the motorcycle that the U.S. war hero himself rides. Befitting a man who is apparently the Captain of America, the film's superhero finds himself atop the most quintessential of American motorcycles: Harley-Davidson.
Meant to be a modern interpretation of H-D's classic WLA military motorcycles, Captain America's custom machine started life as a stock Harley-Davidson Cross Bones model. Fitting, as the Cross Bones, with its spring-mounted solo saddle and springer fork, is arguably the most period-correct platform in H-D's current line from which to begin.
Want to know more? Check out the video after the break, where Harley-Davidson breaks down the thought process that went into creating Captain America's motorcycle. You'll also see a few brief snippets with riding footage from the film.
One more thing: Click here for details on how to win your own customized Harley as part of a Captain America-themed promotional giveaway. Enjoy!

Followup: Uncovering more details on BMW's i3 and i8 [w/videos]
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Hybrid, Technology, Hatchback, BMW, Electric
We've just wrapped up a series of workshops in Germany about all things BMW i, but before we drop our "Behind i" feature on you next week, we wanted to give you a few tasty morsels to chew on while you're pursuing our massive gallery of the all-new i3 and i8 concepts.
If you haven't read our breakdown on both models, check it out now, as it includes the basic specs, powertrain, suspension, chassis and a cursory look at all the techy tidbits behind the i3 and i8. But here's the latest...
The i3 will tip the scales at 2,755 pounds, while the i8 will come in under 3,300 pounds. While that might sound slightly chunky, consider that the average gasoline-powered car converted to EV duty normally tacks on around 500 pounds courtesy of the battery, motor and cooling system. When looked at in this way, both models could be considered rather svelte.
The carbon fiber "Life" structure that envelops the i3's passengers is so strong (yet very light) that BMW's engineers didn't have to include a B-pillar for structural rigidity. That means ingress and egress should be easy, aided by the fact that both models utilize ultra-thin carbon fiber and plastic bits for the interior elements. Click past the jump for a whole mess of videos featuring the new i3 and i8 concepts in more detail.
According to Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Design, those oh-so-low side windows probably won't make it to production, but the design team is intent on bringing as much light into the cabin as possible - particularly on the i8. However, the i3's glass roof will make way for a full carbon fiber piece when production begins next year.
In our previous story, we mentioned that the i3 could be outfitted with an optional range extending engine, and after much poking and prodding, we got an answer on what it is and how it'll work. The engine will be rear-mounted, right against the electric motor (not compromising luggage space), and it will be a two-cylinder gasoline mill with a displacement of around 600cc. Cooling will be provided by the liquid system keeping the battery pack in check, and the i3 will be a true range-extender - no engine torque will reach the wheels mechanically (unlike the Chevrolet Volt). How much of an extension? Double, or around 186 miles.
And as for the i8, this will be the first mid-engine BMW in nearly 30 years, likely to be fitted with a dual-clutch gearbox and some kind of torque vectoring system to put out a combined 402 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels when the turbo'd 1.5-liter three-cylinder and electric motor are working in unison.
Check out a whole slew of videos from BMW after the break.

Report: Will Land Rover abandon the Defender?
Filed under: SUV, Europe, Land Rover, Off-Road
The Land Rover Defender may not be sold here in the United States, but its presence in the global automotive marketplace is huge. It's Britain's Wrangler. Much like the Jeep off-roader or even the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, the Defender's core styling and functionality hasn't changed much over the past few decades, and that's just fine with us. However, it looks like the Defender's candle has the potential to burn out soon, according to Auto Express.
Simply put, Land Rover does not have a concrete plan in place regarding what to do with the Defender. In speaking to Auto Express, the automaker's Colin Green said, "If we get it wrong we are messing up one of the industry's biggest icons, and in that sense it's a tremendous responsibility." We imagine this is why General Motors has taken its sweet time in bringing out the C7 Corvette.
Currently, the Defender is set up to meet Euro V emissions through 2016, but after that, it's unclear what will happen to the British stalwart. One option is to fit cleaner engines under the hood to extend the vehicle's life, and the option of a complete redesign is still being kicked around. Auto Express suggests that an all-new Defender could be built on the same platform as the LR4 and Range Rover Sport, but it would increase cost.
Thankfully, Land Rover says that abandoning the Defender program is its least-preferred option.

Rumormill: Mini's upcoming Traveller model to be most practical yet
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Hatchback, Mini, Rumormill
If you thought Mini had strayed far from its raison d'être with the Countryman crossover, consider the following: while the original Mini was diminutive in size, it was all about maximizing interior volume against a compact exterior shape - a ratio, if you will, of cabin size to overall dimensions. The rumored upcoming Mini minivan, then, might seem like another step too far for the brand, but could very much fit the bill in its size-bending capacity.
Alternatively referred to as the Spacebox (likely an internal nickname) or the Traveller (as the above-pictured concept that previewed the Clubman was called), the idea is all about adaptability. Rear-hinged suicide doors would flank both sides, while the rear cargo area would be accessed via 60/40 split doors for added versatility. The shape would also likely push the cabin higher and more forward for something closer to a one-box shape that could share its underpinnings and more with BMW's upcoming 1 Series "activity vehicle."
Word has it that a concept car is being prepared for unveiling in the near future. Of course, all this could amount to just a rumor, but given Mini's relentless march of model variants, we'd hardly be surprised to see this one coming to fruition.

Review: 2012 Fiat 500C
Filed under: Convertible, Budget, New Car Reviews, Fiat
Fashion-Forward Fiat For FunNorthern California is an odd place - and that's just the cars. For every Toyota Prius-driving eco-yuppie, you'll find a diehard Datsun 510 enthusiast. And you can't toss a bushel of puntarelle without hitting a grease-powered Mercedes-Benz in the East Bay. But here's a better case in point: A few weeks back, I was driving an arrest-me-red Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible and it barely turned a head. One week later, there was a Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec parked in my driveway and I couldn't stop fielding questions.
Like I said, odd.
So when I snagged the keys to a 2012 Fiat 500C, I wasn't sure how it would be received by the mismatched masses of the Bay Area. Less than 10 miles later, I lost count of the number of thumbs-up and double-takes I got while crossing the San Mateo Bridge. Surprising? Not really.
After all, this is the coast that seared the original Volkswagen Beetle into the national consciousness and took to budget compacts years before Detroit had a clue. But while we've driven the 500 in all its guises, one question remained: Could you really live with something this damned cute?

Report: Toyota safety tech can take steering control to avoid impact
Filed under: Etc., Japan, Safety, Technology, Toyota
According to The Detroit News, Toyota is working on a new pre-crash system that will actually take control and steer the vehicle to minimize impact in the event of an unavoidable collision. The system combines super-sensitive radar with a camera array in the front fascia to detect possible impacts. On-board computers then calculate the correct levels of braking and steering required to avoid the crash, and if the driver fails to act, the automatic system takes over.
Like most manufacturers, Toyota has the admirable goal of reducing injuries and fatalities in its products to zero, though The Detroit News reports that the automaker wouldn't comment on when we could expect to see the innovations on the road. The pre-crash steering is specifically designed to reduce the chance of a vehicle-pedestrian impact, and Toyota is also working on systems to accommodate drivers who have heart attacks while behind the wheel.
It's true that vehicle fatalities have seen a steady decline over the past few years thanks to improved safety technology, but as cars get safer, drivers become even more detached from the task at hand. Economists call it a Jevons Paradox; drivers have effectively consumed the safety benefits supplied by car companies to become lazier and less safe than they would be without the tech. Maybe Toyota should find a way to force drivers to put down their phones, shut off their infotainment screens and simply drive. Just a thought.

Filed under: Spy Photos, Crossover, Infiniti, Misc. Auto Shows
Infiniti is getting ready to unveil its latest crossover at Pebble Beach in August, and has just released a second teaser shot to give us a glimpse of what to expect.
The JX will join the svelte EX and FX models in Infiniti's crossover range, but offer seven seats in a larger package. This second teaser of the taillight and part of the left flank follows the previous front-end crop and the profile rendering that preceded it, showing us that little bit more as Nissan's luxury division prepares to take a bigger chunk out of Lexus in the premium family hauler game.
