First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Volkswagen, First Drives
A GTI For The MassesWe've given Volkswagen a fair amount of flack for the 2011 Jetta - and justifiably so. All the things we held dear in previous generations - high-end materials, solid driving dynamics and that general sense of premium the Germans do so well - were all nixed in the name of market share.
But as we suspected, it's working. Jetta sales in the U.S. are up 74 percent over last year as consumers view the redesigned, cut-priced sedan as an upmarket contender to the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cruze. And honestly, more power to them.
What we've really been waiting for is this, the 2012 Jetta GLI. Packing VW's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a six-speed manual or optional DSG and an independent rear suspension, the GLI is here to assuage enthusiasts' fears that VW has lost the plot in its relentless pursuit of global market dominance. Just as Porsche hasn't given up on sports cars as it expands into un-Porsche-like segments, neither has VW in its efforts to appeal to more people. But unlike Ferdinand's second child, we still have the nagging sense that Volkswagen is leaving something on the table - despite the GLI's potential on paper.

Teased: Lexus teases GS F-Sport and GS 450h
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Lexus, Luxury
Lexus may have debuted the 2012 GS 350 as part of last week's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance festivities in California, but the automaker isn't quite done with the rollout of its new rear-wheel-drive sedan. Seen here, Lexus has just released two teasers of two more models in the GS range: the sportier looking F Sport and hybrid-enhanced GS 450h.
Like the rest of Lexus' F-Sport treatments, we don't expect the GS F-Sport to be much more than a trim-and-tape job, though some suspension tuning may be in store for this model. It's been long rumored that Lexus is preparing an honest-to-goodness GS F performance model, so the F Sport trim ought to be similar to what the automaker offers on its smaller IS sedan.
The GS 450h will likely use the same 3.5-liter V6 and electric motor setup that's found in the current car, though some small massaging should hopefully improve fuel economy ever so slightly. We'll have the full details on both cars later this year.

Tom Cruise test drives F1 car at Willow Springs
Filed under: Motorsports, Celebrities
"I'm not a doctor, but I play one on television." If that line sounds familiar from old television commercials featuring soap opera stars in white coats, bear in mind that the theme extends far beyond the annals of fake medicine. People get mixed up between actors and the characters they play all the time.
Tom Cruise, for example, has driven all sorts of vehicles on the silver screen, from cars to motorbikes to speed boats, often pulling off scarcely believable stunts and feats in the process. But how much of that comes down to camera trickery and special effects, and how much can be chalked up to actual driving talent?
We got a pretty good answer when Cole Trickle himself set the lap record (however short-lived) on Britain's Top Gear, but Cruise wasn't about to stop there. So while David Coulthard and the Red Bull demonstration team were Stateside for a show in Texas, they met the Hollywood mega-star out in Southern California to let him try his hand at driving an Formula One car.
The seven-hour test at Willow Springs started in a road car, where Coulthard and Cruise drove the 2.5-mile track to get a feeling for the layout before the Mission: Impossible star climbed into the F1 car for 24 laps. At the end of the day, Cruise managed a top speed of 181 miles per hour - just four mph off of DC's trap speed - while scrubbing 11 seconds off his first lap - a marked improvement that left Coulthard impressed at Tom's skills.
Stay tuned for video footage when it's released and check out the official snapshots in the gallery for a closer look.

Video: This is what a 426-mph flying mile looks like in HD
Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Videos
What's the fastest you've ever driven? We're sure many of you have crested the century mark. Some of you may have seen 150 miles per hour crawl by on the speedo, and perhaps a lucky few have experience 200. We can all but guarantee that none of you have gone as fast George Poteet, though.
Poteet is the man who strapped himself into a Bonneville Blown Fuel Streamliner known as Speed Demon, and proceeded to run down the salt flats at a tremendous rate of speed. Using a set of RePlay XD cameras (the same type we used for our Woodward Dream Cruise coverage), Poteet captured footage of his 426 mile per hour flying mile run.
For that speed, you need a serious engine, and the Speed Demon comes prepared. A 347 cubic-inch V8 mill gets paired with a pair of Turbonetics "Demon" turbochargers. The result is over 2,200 horses and a thrill ride that few get to experience.
What does it feel like to trip the lights fantastic at 426 miles per hour? Click past the jump to see for yourself.

Official: 2013 Lexus GS 350 fully revealed at Pebble Beach
Filed under: Sedan, Lexus, Luxury
We've endured the teasers, seen the leaks and even driven a prototype, and now the wraps officially come off. This is the 2013 Lexus GS 350, the automaker's latest bid to create a driver-focused mid-sizer aimed at the hearts, minds and wallets of would-be 5 Series and E-Class buyers. It might be a tough sell, but it's a compelling case on paper, even if the styling leaves us wanting.

Monterey: Cadillac Ciel Concept designed for decadent drives up the coast
Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Hybrid, Cadillac, Misc. Auto Shows
Cadillac has chosen the backdrop of this week's classic car festivities in Monterey, California to debut a new concept convertible called the Ciel, which means "sky" in French. The four-seat, four-door drop top was designed to be the ultimate carriage for a drive up the coast, as well as hints at Cadillac's aspirations to offer flagship luxury products in the future.
The Ciel is powered by a 425-horsepower, twin-turbocharged version of GM's 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct injection that's augmented by a hybrid system using lithium-ion batteries. Those massive 22-inch wheels may not look that large because the Ciel itself is a big boat with a wheelbase 12 inches longer than a CTS sedan and overall length cresting 200 inches. Cadillac says the car's shape is more natural and organic than its current design language, perhaps expressing more Art than Science with smoother lines and softer curves than we're used to seeing. We particularly like the slightly rising chrome accent line along the rocker panels that stretches the length of the Ciel.
Exterior aside, inside the Ciel is where we want to be. Passengers are absolutely coddled in their individual bucket seats with unique niceties like pull-out blankets to ward off an evening's chill, aromatherapy controls in the armrests and a drawer containing sun screen, sun glasses and a towel. Of course, technology is ever-present in the cabin with each seat having its own suite of connectivity options and the center dashboard being topped with an inductive charging surface.
Check out Cadillac's official images as well as our own live shots in the galleries below. Two official videos and Cadillac's official PR can be found after the jump.

Video: Motorcyclists take revenge on hapless Porsche 928
Filed under: Classics, Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Safety, Videos, Porsche, Motorcycle
The roadways can be a dangerous place to be, no matter what type of vehicle is moving you and yours to and fro. Though cars and trucks are getting safer year after year, the same can't necessarily be said of motorcycles. While advances like anti-lock brakes, traction control and even airbags have made modern motorcycles easier to ride, it's no surprise which vehicle generally wins when a car and a motorcycle collide.
That's where the proper safety gear comes into play. In order to maximize safety when riding on two (or three) wheels, a rider needs to cover him or herself in the full spate of riding apparel, and companies like Icon Motorsports fill that need. Thing is, motorcyclists tend to be an interesting bunch, and appealing to their sense and sensibilities isn't easy.
Hence, the video you'll see after the break.* In it, a super cool dude with a ratty Porsche 928 has locked himself firmly in the '80s and doesn't give a single thought to anyone else, including a pair of Harley-Davidson Sportster-mounted bikers, ably played by Rob Carpenter and Chris Rayburn. Mayhem ensues. Oh, and as is often the case in the real world, the motorcyclist gets the girl.
If you like the production values, check out a couple more Icon videos that we've featured on Autoblog in the past.
*Professional riders, closed course, etc.
