Alonso: Qualifying critical for Ferrari

Fernando Alonso thinks he and his Ferrari team can be in the hunt for victory in the Indian Grand Prix if they can qualify near the front of the grid. With the team encouraged by the form it has shown in practice, helped in part by a new front wing design that was trialled in Korea for the first time, Alonso is upbeat about the potential for the rest of the weekend

Report: F1 may be coming to New York, but not NASCAR

Filed under:

Red Bull pit stop demo in Times Square

NASCAR and New York may strike you as diametrically opposite pillars of modern America. But if Formula One can race in Texas, surely NASCAR can race in New York, right?

F1 has recently announced two new races in the United States: the U.S. Grand Prix slated to race in Austin, Texas, for the first time next year, and the Grand Prix of America that will follow a year later in West New York and Weehawken, New Jersey. In other words, F1 racing is coming to two very different parts of the country. So surely NASCAR can as well.

The stock car racing series is already big in the South, but while series organizers have in the past sought a location closer to New York to mount a race, that probably won't be happening any time soon. According to The Wall Street Journal, organizers feel they're already reaching their target audience through the races they have in place, and that expansion into new markets wouldn't be prudent given the lagging economy.

So if you're a NASCAR fan stuck far away from the racing action in the Big Apple, it looks like you'll still have to make the trek upstate to Watkins Glen or out to New Hampshire.

Pirelli predicts intriguing qualifying

Pirelli director of motorsport Paul Hembery thinks teams are going to face an 'interesting challenge' with tyre strategies in qualifying because of the big time difference between the two compounds. The Italian tyre maker has brought the soft and the hard compound for the inaugural event in India, and early data has suggested that there could be as big a gap as two seconds per lap in pace disparity between the two types of tyre. Such a time difference could force even the fastest of teams to use up a valuable set of soft rubber in Q1 - which could leave them unable to save new sets for the race, but also make it harder for teams at the back of the grid to get within the mandatory 107 per cent limit

Button rues ?terrible? qualifying

Jenson Button described his Indian Grand Prix qualifying session as 'terrible' and admitted he was puzzled by how his McLaren's performance had changed since practice. The Briton was 0.7 seconds off the pace in fifth place at the end of Q3, though he will start fourth once his team-mate Lewis Hamilton drops from second to fifth due to a gearbox change penalty

For a guy whose favorite quote reads “all good things must come to an end. Ecclestone: Korea future uncertain

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has cast doubt on the future of the Korean Grand Prix, after ruling out talks to renegotiate its contract. The promoter of the Yeongam event, Won-Hwa Park, told AUTOSPORT earlier this month that he wanted to seek a cut in the race hosting fee because of the huge losses the event is facing. Ecclestone has said that such an outcome is unlikely, however, after conceding that he has 'no idea' if the event would remain a part of the calendar.

Report: Marchionne: Two-tier wage structure untenable

Sergio MarchionneChrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that he hopes to end the automaker's two-tier wage structure in the company's next round of labor talks with the United Auto Workers. According to Automotive News, Marchionne said that the current system creates two classes of workers and that it isn't viable in the long term.

The CEO went on to say that the program is currently undermining efforts to make Chrysler and Fiat work together as a single entity. Ideally, Chrysler would have a single wage set that recognizes the level of worker involvement in generating profits for the company.

As Automotive News reminds us, domestic manufacturers won the right to pay entry-level workers a lower wage in 2007. UAW President Bob King has already made waves about doing away with the two-tier pay system, and Marchionne says that his views are consistent with those of the union leader. King said that the union originally left a one-tier system to help save domestic automakers, but now that Ford, General Motors and Chrysler are beginning to look healthy once again, workers want equal pay.

SEMA: Chevy Silverado Realtree concept bound for SEMA [w/video]

If you'd like a little less SEMA-fication with your SEMA, then the understated Silverado Realtree Concept might suit. Developed with Realtree outdoor outfitters, with whom Chevrolet has had a seven-year relationship, the concept is based on the 2500 Crew Cab and aims to be "the ultimate hunting pickup."

Powered by a Duramax diesel with a whopping 765 pound-feet of torque churning those 35-inch tires, we're thinking this thing can drag home whatever animal the crew of sportsmen inside can bag. Speaking of inside, the cabin completes the outdoorsy theme with dark cocoa leather seats bearing camouflage piping and blaze orange stitching.

There's a teaser video and press release after the jump, and the real thing is just around the corner at SEMA.

Flyin' Miata V8 Targa MX-5 Miata

Wedging myself into the cockpit of Keith Tanner's 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata turned Targa Newfoundland podium finisher, I'm struck with the realization that most race cars are the automotive equivalent of a pet electric eel. They look fantastic lounging around, and you may even be struck with the impulse to get close, but the reality is that it's only a matter of time before it reaches out and lights you up like a cheap string of Christmas lights. This notion is only underscored when Tanner hands me a set of noise-cancelling headphones with an integrated com system.

"Here. You'll probably want these," he says. "It can get kind of loud in here."

With a 400-horsepower General Motors L33 wedged between the fenders of the poised Miata, it's only a matter of time before the stripped interior resonates with the sound of eight furious cylinders. I ask if there's anything I should know before I hit the ignition. Tanner says no. I'm beginning to suspect he's lying to me.

BMW product head says M division would like to develop own car

Inside Line reports that BMW's M division wants to play with the other kids and develop its own car, but it's got to wait on parent BMW to say Alles klar. This isn't new; they've been public about the desire for at least two years. The holdup, naturally, is that bean-and-spreadsheet wielding boogeyman named The Business Case: any in-house M offering has to feed the profit motive before getting the okay.

Sure, Audi has its R8, but that was made easier because of the Lamborghini link. The real template for this is Mercedes-Benz's AMG, which created the SLS on its own, and on its own chassis. The sales success of that car must surely have the folks at M anxious to fabricate a proper challenger.

When we talked to former M Division head Dr. Kay Segler, he spoke about pushing the 1 Series M through without dilution in spite of frequent reservations about its business case. We haven't heard the same talk yet from the department's current head, so, using a different template, it could be time for M engineers to start turning wrenches in their spare time: the IS-F began as an after-hours project, and in effect so did the Pagani Zonda. Give us the M1 Hommage, guys. Or feel free to do even better...

Hyundai hasn?t even revealed the Veloster-like,face-lifted Genesis coupe yet, but the Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC, which the company will show off at the SEMA show this November, might be a rare situation when a SEMA show car actually hints at a potentially awesome production vehicle. Williams must ?understand? car issues

Rubens Barrichello thinks it is vital that Williams gets an understanding of why this year's car did not perform if it is to ensure that its 2012 challenger is a big step forward. With Williams enduring its worst ever season in F1, Barrichello thinks the target for the remainder of the campaign is not in improving the current car but in getting to grips on what went wrong last winter. "The car was born bad and there is no way of turning that back," said Barrichello.

eBay Find of the Day: 1994 Ford Power Stroke Concept

Ford Power Stroke Concept

Some concept cars don't die off into the unknown oblivion of some random unmarked warehouse. Instead, they just fade into eBay Motors. The 1994 Ford Power Stroke Concept is the latest refugee from the show circuit that has shown up on everyone's favorite auction site.

Originally designed to show off the Ford Power Stroke diesel engine, the bulbous and somewhat homely concept is about as aesthetically far from any full-size truck as it gets. The seller says the vehicle functions as it should and comes with the custom wheels and tires that it rolled onto the stage with way back when. Apparently the show electronics are also included in the deal.

Unfortunately, this machine isn't registered as a street vehicle and likely never will be. As such, the winning bidder will receive a bill of sale. As of the time of writing, the truck has six days left on the auction with zero bids and a $40,000 starting bid. Head over to eBay Motors to check out the auction for yourself.

Official: Volkswagen releases Polo R-Line and Passat Exclusive in Germany

Volkswagen Polo R-Line

We may have to wait a while for Volkswagen to release a Polo R - in fact it may never reach American showrooms at all - but as a stopgap measure VW has released a pair of R-Line packages for its diminutive hatchback that at least make it look the part.

The exterior R-Line trim package comes with wider wheels in either 16-inch diameter or 17, new bumpers front and rear, rear spoiler and diffuser, chrome exhaust tips, side skirts, fog lamps and gloss black grille. The interior package, meanwhile, gives the cabin Alcantara or leather trim, sport buckets, black headliner, a new steering wheel, piano-lacquer trim and aluminum pedals. Both kits can be fitted to either the Comfortline or Highline trim levels, and appear, for the time being, to be limited to the German market.

At the same time Volkswagen has rolled out a new Exclusive edition of the Passat, incorporating 18-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, chocolate brown Nappa leather trim with white top-stitching and wood and aluminum trim. Since this trim level is fitted on the sedan or wagon versions of the European-market Passat - an entirely different vehicle from the one we get here - we wouldn't hold our breath on this one making it to U.S. dealerships, either. But you can check 'em both out in the high-res image gallery for a closer look.

West Coast Customs to overhaul... taco shop?

Inside West Coast CustomsHaving plundered the vehicle modification scene for the past eighteen years, the crew from West Coast Customs is moving on to restaurant design. Chronic Tacos in Corona, California now sports a taste of the modification shop's style.

We'll do our best to skip the easy meme joke and move forward.

The press release is markedly skimpy on details about what sort of modifications the shop made to the restaurant. We imagine plenty of fish tanks and subwoofers along with bad paint and tacky underbody lighting. The Corona location is now officially called West Coast Customs' Chronic Tacos.

West Coast Customs has moved out of the "Pimp My Ride" game and into a new show. "Inside West Coast Customs" is officially in its second season on the Velocity channel, with the newest episode having aired on October 16. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Matt Kenseth fended off Kyle Busch to claim his third win of the season while reigning champion Jimmie Johnson took a major hit on his title hopes after crashing out of the race. In a night where the Roush Fenway Fords looked to be the class of the field, Kenseth made the most of his Fusion, timed his strategy and his moves to perfection, overtaking Busch following a late restart after the Joe Gibbs Racing had paced the field for 110 consecutive laps. Once on clean air Kenseth was able to open a gap and then keep Busch on his mirrors, hoping the race would go green all the way to the checkered flag.

McLaren and RBR favourites ? Button

Jenson Button believes that victory in Sunday's Korean Grand Prix will go to either McLaren or Red Bull as the two teams dominated the top four position on the grid in qualifying. Button starts third on the grid, having been bumped off the front row by new world champion Sebastian Vettel as Lewis Hamilton took pole, but says he reckons the race is wide open given the high tyre degradation expected in the race. "As a team and in terms of the car, I think we are in a great place right now," said Button, "I really don't know how the race is going to go tomorrow but you would think it would be between us and the Red Bulls.
