Convers goes into Administration

The World Rally Championship's commercial rights holder, Convers Sports Initiatives, has gone into administration. One of CSI's major backers, Vladimir Antonov, was arrested in London last Friday and questioned in connection with an investigation into the asset-stripping of Bankas Snoras, a bank that he was a 68 per cent shareholder in. Antonov, who was later bailed, denies any wrongdoing.

Tokyo: Toyota GT 86 makes a compelling case for itself

Toyota GT 86 concept at Tokyo Motor Show

Certainly for the moment, this is the biggest competition the Subaru BRZ has: its twin, the Toyota GT 86. The volcanic orange coupe was unveiled in another corner of the Tokyo Motor Show, and frankly, it's got a lot to recommend it. The frontal treatment is slightly different than on the BRZ, but the only digression out back is the lack of a spoiler, and the GT 86 looks pretty good without it.

Inside, it's a tale of two cabins. Clearly Toyota has brought a higher-spec cockpit to the party, and although you might not dig the red two-tone scheme, the iPhone cradle, toggle switches and white gauges are nifty. Of course, that niftyness will cost you a navigation screen, but these are exactly the kinds of choices the GT 86 vs BRZ crowd will need to make. Brush up on the specs in the release after the jump and take a walk around it in our high-res image gallery.

Petersen Automotive Museum co-founder Margie Petersen passes away at 76

Margie Petersen, philanthropist and wife of late automotive publisher Robert E. Petersen, died on November 25, succumbing to breast cancer at the age of 76.

Mrs. Petersen was best known in automotive circles for helping her husband found the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, which opened in 1994, and serving on the Board of Directors of the Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation. Earlier this year, she made a $100 million contribution to the museum that bears her name, which included her family's private car collection.

But Mrs. Petersen's philanthropy extended beyond the automotive world, as the long list of organizations she worked with included Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars Sinai Research for Women's Cancers in Los Angeles, St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood in Los Angeles, and Friends of Robinson Gardens in Beverly Hills, California, among many others.

Born Margie McNally, in her youth Petersen was a model and actress. She and her husband had two sons that died in a plane crash in 1975. Robert E. Petersen died from cancer himself in 2007, after a lifetime of publishing such esteemed car magazines as Hot Rod and Motor Trend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Petersen Automotive Museum at 6060 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036, or the charity of your choice in Mrs. Petersen's honor.

Teased: Gumpert teases new model to debut in Geneva

Gumpert Geneva Motor Show teaser

Gumpert looks to be making a habit of unveiling new models at the Geneva Motor Show. The company pulled the sheets back on the Tornante during this year's exhibition, and a new teaser hints that the automaker has something special planned for 2012.

The boutique automaker has dropped a shadowy image of what's likely to be the company's next supercar. Don't expect too much in the way of details, however. Currently, Gumpert is only revealing that the vehicle will boast an "unmistakable sound" and that it recently spent some time at the Altenburg Airport for an impromptu photo shoot.

Beyond that, all we know is what we can suss from the photo. The vehicle looks to be based on the company's Apollo heathen, as we can clearly see the pronounced fender arches, short hood and roof-mounted air intake, though the headlights look to have received some attention. Whatever the aesthetics, the vehicle is likely to bring plenty of power to the table... Gumpert isn't exactly known for its subtlety.

Report: Toyota, BMW may build green cars together

Toyota and BMW have reportedly begun discussions on swapping their signature green technologies. The Japanese automaker would open up its hybrid tech to BMW, while the Germans would provide diesel engines for Toyotas. This is a little different than the recent memorandum of understanding signed between Ford and Toyota, since that partnership - if it comes to fruition - would see both companies jointly developing a hybrid system for trucks.

The BMW and Toyota talks are about swapping tech to save money on "core technologies." BMW's gain would be in the U.S., where hybrids are still much more in vogue than in Europe, while Toyota's interest is in shoring up its diesel position in Europe, where hybrids aren't yet the thing and the company posted a loss through the first half of the year. For instance, of the eight family cars that Toyota sells in the UK, only three can be had with a diesel.

Only talks have begun, so there's no official deal in place while Toyota works to see if BMW diesels will fit in its cars. One also has to wonder how managers at Lexus would feel about seeing their hybrid tech behind a roundel badge.

With the track evaluating modifications in the wake of two fatal stock car accidents earlier this year, there is already a scheme in place for revisions to be made to the run-off areas and current pitlane entry for next year. One longer-term proposal being considered for 2013 is the total relocation of the pits and paddock - to allow the circuit to build new garages, team offices, media centre and hospitality areas

Report: The story behind that wacky Mosler RaptorGTR video is even stranger than we thought [w/video]

Filed under:

Abby Cubey video

We've seen some painful product placement efforts revolving around cars over the past few years. Some of them involve movies or television shows, but more than a fair share come down to music videos. Yet none, absolutely none, can compare with the bizarre spectacle of Abby Cubey behind the wheel of the Mosler RaptorGTR.

For those not yet acquainted, the music video (available after the jump) features a performing artist unknown until now singing some extremely cheesy lyrics in, on and around the Florida-built supercar, accompanied by some very strange sideshow acts. It hardly does the performers any favors, and certainly doesn't help the exotic sports car along any either. But just how did this collaboration come into being?

The story is a little stranger than you might have thought. This wasn't, according to an investigative report undertaken by our friends at Jalopnik, just some American Idol reject getting ahold of a hot car in an attempt to jump-start her career. It actually runs a lot deeper than that, delving deep into a struggle over the business itself responsible for creating the car.

It all seems to revolve around one Todd Wagner, an engineer who, while at Mosler, helped create the RaptorGTR. Wagner has long since been ejected from the company, which is now being controlled by his ex-wife Jill. Todd says he has a distributorship agreement with Mosler in place - a claim that the company flatly denies - and that he created the video in order to promote the vehicle.

Reports also indicate that the terms of Mosler's sale specifically preclude Todd Wagner - who is quickly emerging as severely delusional - from having any involvement. Jill Wagner, meanwhile, speculates that her ex-husband is romantically involved with Cubey, and that the video is part of some misguided effort to promote her career as well as the business that is apparently not his to promote in the first place.

So is it working? Well, with some 40,000 YouTube hits in less than a week, we're reminded of the truism that there's no such thing as bad publicity. But after watching the video ourselves, we're beginning to doubt that very much. Follow the jump for the original video.

Report: Nissan Titan successor pushed back to 2014

2012 Nissan Titan

It may be a while before buyers get their hands on the next-generation Nissan Titan. Automotive News reports that the vehicle has encountered engineering delays brought about by this year's earthquake and tsunami tragedies in Japan, and now the next-gen pickup may not debut until the 2014 model year. The news comes courtesy of Andy Palmer, executive vice president for vehicle planning and program management at Nissan, who said that he made the decision to delay the vehicle's development.

As you may recall, Nissan originally planned to co-develop a successor with Chrysler. Unfortunately, the American automaker entered bankruptcy before that plan could come to fruition. The next-generation full-size pickup from Nissan was slated to debut this year.

The current Titan debuted in 2004, making the truck one of the oldest platforms in a fiercely competitive segment. Here's hoping that the delay won't cause any issues with turbo diesel four-cylinder engine Nissan is currently developing with Cummins.

Red Bull in the dark over Vettel?s tyre

Red Bull Racing thinks it may never have a definitive explanation for what caused Sebastian Vettel's puncture in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after post-race analysis failed to uncover a firm answer. Although investigations have ruled out a structural failure of the tyre or valve, and Pirelli says it has discovered no proof that debris was to blame, Red Bull Racing suspects that the most likely cause of the tyre deflating was a piece of carbon fibre from another car that Vettel ran over at the first exit kerb. Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner said that analysis work with Pirelli had failed to uncover a definite cause
