Schumacher: W03 showing good signs

Michael Schumacher believes it is too soon to know whether the new Mercedes W03 can be a winner but says that it did give him the right messages when he shook it down for the first time at Silverstone last week. Mercedes unveiled its 2012 challenger at Barcelona on Tuesday morning, having completed a private test with it at the circuit on Sunday. And Schumacher says he can't wait to get a better picture of its true potential this week.

New Honda gets maiden test run

Honda's new Civic British Touring Car hit the track for the first time at Brands Hatch on Tuesday. Defending champion Matt Neal, who will again be partnered at the Team Dynamics-run Honda Racing squad by Gordon Shedden this year, completed around 50 laps of the Indy circuit in the NGTC-spec machine, which is, like its predecessor, powered by a Neil Brown-prepared turbo engine. Team principal Steve Neal told AUTOSPORT: "It was more of a shakedown than a proper test.

Hulkenberg encouraged by early form

Nico Hulkenberg says the adaptability of Force India's VJM05 added to his feeling of optimism after topping the timesheets following the second day of pre-season testing in Barcelona. The German ran at the sharp end of the field throughout the day, before establishing himself at the front after changing to Pirelli's super soft compound in the final stages of the morning running. While Hulkenberg admits he was pleased to register a good time, he said he was also encouraged by the VJM05's baseline set-up and its resulting ability to adapt to different compounds.

Report: Why the Fiat 500 isn't the flop it's being made out to be

Fiat 500 C

The poor Fiat 500. The adorable three-door hasn't exactly been the resounding success Fiat had hoped, missing sales projections by a wide margin. As you may recall, the company managed to sell just 17,945 units between March and December of 2011. That's a far cry from 50,000 units annually the company projected before the 500 landed in dealerships. But, according to Polk, things may not be as bad as they seem. While it's true that the 500 managed to pull down just four percent of the subcompact car segment, the results look a bit rosier when you compare the 500 to other three-door B-segment offerings.

In that admittedly small group, the 500 did quite well, pulling down 27 percent of all sales and landing in second place behind the Mini Cooper. The plucky Italian even manged to best the Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris. Still, as Polk points out, that's a good portion of a very small corner of the total subcompact segment, and an even thinner slice of the American car market.

The upcoming five-door 500 will likely give Fiat an extra edge, though whether the vehicle helps the automaker crest its 50,000 unit goal remains to be seen.

Why the Fiat 500 isn't the flop it's being made out to be originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 09:28:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Week Two of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series has come and gone and the battle to make the NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series is in full force. Class A drivers stepping up their game to unheard of levels made Week Two at Atlanta Motor Speedway the most thrilling week in quite some time. Top names in sim racing took part in Atlanta’s festivities and made the week’s points totals sky rocket. Jason Karlavige edged-out Jared Crawford to win the top split of the week, and the absurdly high total of 360 points that went along with it. Karlavige’s record was unblemished on the week, as he only made the one start, earning the pole, and leading 37 of the 110 laps to put his name at the top of the [...]

Interactive Viano ad

It's quite apparent that technology, in addition to helping us avoid advertising (thank you, DVR), has simultaneously enabled much more of it, and in many more places. And when used properly, technology has made some ads a lot more interesting.

Mercedes-Benz constructed an interactive ad for its Viano minivan in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse subway station. To promote the chasmic space inside the people-hauler, the ad allowed riders waiting for trains to open the door of a virtual Viano using their own car keys, then watch what kinds of things climbed out and how many of them there were. Follow the jump to check out the video.

Report: Investment firm buys 5.8% of GM

General Motors' Renaissance Center HQ flyby view

General Motors
stock is down 45 percent over the last year, which would lead the uninformed to think that the automaker is still losing money by the bucketload. On the contrary, The General pulled in a healthy $7.6 billion in 2011.

Does that mother lode of cash make GM a buy for 2012? Capital research Global Investors seems to think so. The Detroit News reports that the investment firm has purchased 5.8 percent of the Detroit automaker. That's 92 million shares, which translates to about $2.3 billion at $25 per share.

The investment firm claims GM stock is a strong buy even though its European sales are lagging. David Kudla, CEO of Mainstay Capital Management LLC, points out that there are a lot of automakers selling vehicles in Europe, adding "everybody who does business there is struggling." The Capital Group also points to continued growth in the U.S. market due in part to pent-up demand as a reason for the big bet on GM stock.

Report: Hyundai Veloster Turbo to start at $21,500?

As much as we love the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, it's the 2013 Turbo model that really gets our juices flowing (especially in matte gray, for the record). It takes that unique three-door (four-door?) configuration one step further with the addition of some more aggressive aero bits, a revised front end and new wheels; not to mention a potent 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four underhood, good for 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

The Veloster Turbo goes on sale this summer, and while official pricing hasn't been released, the folks at Inside Line have apparently confirmed that the car will start at $21,500 - $22,280 when you factor in the $760 destination charge. That's $4,205 more than a base Veloster, but in addition to more power, we expect that some of the base car's optional features will be fitted as standard kit on the Turbo.

What's really interesting, however, is Inside Line's report that the Turbo model was never even part of the original Veloster product strategy here in the United States. No big deal, because we're still getting the forced-induction hatch regardless. But the real reason why this is important is it explains why the Turbo is being offered with a six-speed automatic (in addition to a six-speed manual) rather than the dual-clutch unit found in the base car. Guess that in-house dual-clutch unit can't handle the full 195 lb-ft of the Turbo.

We expect Hyundai to release official Veloster Turbo pricing closer to the car's on-sale date this summer. And if this $21,500 base MSRP stands true, then the affordable end of America's hot hatch pool just got a lot more interesting.

Kia Soul Red Rock Special Edition

The Soul has been a success for Kia, and a big part of that comes down to style. It's something which the Korean automaker has cultivated with a series of special editions, and this is the brand's latest.

First previewed at the New York Auto Show last year, the Red Rock Special Edition has now been confirmed for production and is available to order. Named after the famous rock formations in the American southwest, it's characterized by a shade of brown exterior paint which Kia calls Canyon, complemented by glossy black trim in the fascia and mirror housings. Inside, the black and brown theme continues, with black leather trim and brown cloth seats.

Automatic climate control and heated seats come bundled as standard in a package starting at $20,600, plus destination and taxes. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Video: Cadillac XTS to feature safety tech developed from autonomous vehicles

Cadillac XTS tech

Five years ago, GM engineers, a variety of partner companies, and Carnegie Mellon University built a Chevrolet Tahoe that autonomously traversed 60 miles of urban traffic in less than six hours, taking home the DARPA Urban Challenge win. Later this year, some of that technology will make its way to production in the 2013 Cadillac XTS.

The list of active safety systems in the XTS is easily on par with what the Germans offer, including adaptive cruise control, intelligent brake assist, forward collision alert, automatic collision preparation, lane departure warning, blind spot alert and a heads up display (hit the jump for the full, exhaustive list).

The incorporation of all these systems is something GM is calling "sensor fusion," which combines multiple inputs and serious processing power to, in the words of Bakhtiar Litkouhi, GM Research and Development lab group manager for perception and vehicle control systems, "provide advisory, warning, and control interventions to help drivers avoid collisions and save lives."

It's also the first step in bringing both semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicles to market, something Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are all actively working on.

Get a brief primer on the philosophy behind sensor fusion in the video and accompanying release below the fold.

Exclusive: Why did Honda kill its best performance engine?

The performance profile of the turbo four may have doomed it to being merely a footnote in Honda's illustrious history.

When the 2013 Acura RDX launches this spring, Honda will quietly close down a spur line of its Anna, OH, plant. Since 2006, it had been building the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine used in the first-generation RDX there. These engines were unique, the company's first to be fitted with a turbocharger from the factory. But the redesigned 2013 RDX will be available only with a V6, and with no other application for the turbo four, Honda's most impressive performance engine will die an ignoble death.

The 2.3-liter turbo was a variation of the 2.4-liter four used in the Honda Accord and the Acura TSX. Rated at 240 horsepower, it was the 260 lb-ft of torque that made things special. Honda's traditional approach to engine design had favored high-revving, small displacement engines that made generous power thanks to variable valve timing technologies - but at the expense of torque output. So when Honda announced that it would be producing a turbocharged engine for the first time, it seemed to herald the next wave of Honda performance. Finally, some torque to match the howling VTEC power. But sadly, it was the performance profile of the turbo four that may have doomed it to being merely a footnote in Honda's illustrious history.
