Report: Japanese automakers to discuss rotating schedule of production

Toyota Prius factory in Japan

Automakers in Japan are desperate to restart their factories, but part shortages are in many instances holding up production. But that's not the only issue, as rolling blackouts are making it difficult for the manufacturing sector to maintain steady operation.

USA Today reports that one solution to the problem could be a rotating schedule. Basically, Japan's automakers would alternate which days plants would be open for business. The plan could be as simple as 'Toyota runs on Monday, Honda gets Tuesday, Nissan gets Wednesday and smaller automakers get Thursday.' Alternatively, automakers could alternate shifts on a per-region basis so as not to stress the weakened power grid. Bloomberg reports that automakers will meet soon discuss a rotating schedule.

Japan's all-important auto industry is still early in the process of getting back on track, so we're likely to hear a lot more oddball ideas like a rotating production schedule. Ultimately, automakers will need to get back to full-scale production in the next few weeks, or car buyers around the world (including here in the U.S.) will start to feel the pain.

Indy drivers want restart rethink

Leading IndyCar drivers have called for a rethink of the new double-file restart rules after a string of early crashes in the season-opener in St Petersburg. The first race of the new system saw a massive first-corner crash involving Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti, Mike Conway, Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe, and then further tangles after the ensuing restarts lead to four caution periods in the first 15 laps. Polesitter and second-place finisher Will Power reckoned IndyCar was not the right series to try double-file restarts in - and expects the trouble to continue

Lotus satisfied with race pace

Lotus said it was very satisfied with its race pace in Melbourne, even though it did not achieve its aim of catching the more established midfield teams in the season opener. The team spent the Australian Grand Prix weekend back in the position it had occupied through 2010 - beating Virgin and Hispania, but not quick enough to challenge those ahead. But Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne said the signs from Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen's race performance were very encouraging.

Hinson Motorsports crash at the 2011 Texas Mile - Click above to view video after the jump

Over the weekend, we showed you a horrifying series pf pictures from Hinson Motorsports' 230-mile-per-hour crash at the Texas Mile. The tuner's twin-turbo Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was trying to break its own 224-mph standing-mile record for Corvettes when something went badly awry.

Even now, nobody's quite sure what caused the nearly 2,000-horsepower Vette to go airborne, but it did, rolling several times before coming to rest on its wheels. The new video after the jump offers multiple perspectives on the crash as it happened, and it looks much more violent in the videos than it did in the earlier video footage and stills we saw.

Once again, the driver somehow managed to walk away from the crash unharmed, and Hinson has promised to come back with another entry in the Fall.

Lotus certain it will be quicker in race

Lotus drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli are adamant that they will be much more competitive in race conditions tomorrow when they can generate some tyre temperature, as the team struggled to get near the midfield again in Melbourne qualifying. Despite optimism that Lotus had taken a big step forward over the winter, its drivers assumed their habitual 2010 positions in qualifying in Australia, with Kovalainen 19th and Trulli 20th. The team has struggled with tyre temperature issues all weekend, and Kovalainen was also hampered by a wing problem in Q1.

'Bye Dad: David Evan Davis, Jr., shuts his eyes one last time at 80 years, 140 days

David E. Davis, Jr., with wife Jeannie and son Matt

Talking about my dad just after the day of his death, I'm sort of forced to quote him. Right up to the last, he was "one tough summbitch" as he would say in praising anyone worth their salt. He saved that Burnside, Kentucky, inner country boy just for such moments as these.

His amazing wife Jeannie Luce Kuhn Davis (one of the great names in the annals of stepmothering) and I drove up to the hospital yesterday before I had to get to the airport to head to New York City, where I am writing this now. Jeannie was in her Chrysler minivan - her favorite for hauling dogs and people, in that order - me in a nice Saab 9-5 sedan. We'd brought the two big Italian Spinone hunting dogs, Tavi (for "Ottavio") and Pucci (for "Puccini"), to the hospital the two previous days so they could give some love to their bedridden master. Jeannie was going to bring them again in the afternoon since my dad and everyone else on the floor got such a kick out of them with their silly bearded faces and warm affection.

In the morning my dad was fine and we had a good last bye-bye, saying we'd see each other really soon again anyway. After all, all post-op tests revealed that he was now completely cured of any cancer and he'd be heading home in maybe five or six days to heal up completely. We were all telling as much to the many well-wishers who phoned the room.

Click to continue reading...

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ad spot - Click above to watch the video after the jump

We've seen plenty of luxury sports cars that are later tuned for the 12 Hours of Sebring. Porsche, Ferrari and BMW all do it, and so does General Motors with its Corvette Racing team. So why do the advertising types at GM feel it necessary to talk up their car at the expense of the aforementioned makes by way of this 30-second commercial? GM has earned bragging rights because, unlike the other cars, the stock ZR1 actually had to be de-tuned by 168 horsepower in order to qualify.

Unfortunately for Chevrolet and its racing team, the race cars could have used a few of those ponies, as BMW took first and second, while The General had to settle for third place. Still, the spot serves as a reminder of just how ridiculous it is that the ZR1 comes fresh from the factory with 638 horsepower and a whole world of whoop-ass. Hit the jump to watch the commercial for yourself.

The latest from the Volkswagen bunker in Wolfsburg is that the second-generation New Beetle (henceforth to be known mercifully as 'Beetle') is officially dropping its towel to the floor at the Shanghai Motor Show in April. Whooda thunk it just five years ago? The Beetle is an American pop phenomenon, and it smarts a bit to have lost even that cachet to the all-powerful Chinese venue.

Early word on the Beetle is that it is dynamically far sportier than the outgoing matzoh-ball built exclusively for people desperate for cutesy-ness and absolute symmetry. Oh, yes, and rear passengers without heads.

While Europe is not intended to get the sensational 335-horsepower "W28" in-line five-cylinder turbo seen so far in both the Audi TT RS and RS3, it would seem there is a plot afoot to bring such a Beetle to North America. "The Beetle," a source in Wolfsburg tells Autoblog, "is so much sportier now. It's much more appealing to male buyers as well." Some off-the-record remarks tell of a Beetle thus equipped that is better on the track than another VW R coupe that North America sadly still doesn't get.

The message? No more dung beetles.

Grosjean: No tyre worries at Imola

GP2 polesitter Romain Grosjean believes that the drivers will take more risks with their tyres at Imola this weekend than they did in the Asia series opener in Abu Dhabi. The new Pirelli tyres were a major concern in Abu Dhabi last month, with drivers taking a conservative approach to make sure their rubber lasted the distance. But Grosjean believes that the lower temperatures at Imola, plus the fact that there were not any major issues last time out, will mean that everyone is more aggressive in the early stages this weekend

Stoner: Victory feels like 2007 again

Honda's Casey Stoner said his win in the MotoGP season-opener in Qatar felt similar to the start of his dominant 2007 campaign. The Australian has now won at Losail four times in five years, but he said today's performance in his first race as a factory Honda rider felt particularly reminiscent of when he stunned the paddock by taking his maiden win in the '07 opener and went on to charge to the title with Ducati in his first season at the squad. "It definitely couldn't be any better," said Stoner.

Mirrored Smart Fortwo Electric Drive: Seven years of bad luck if you crash? [w/video]

Apparatjik rocks the disco-ball Smart Fortwo - Click above to watch video after the jump

What happens if you take a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, add a disco-ball finish and then throw in Electriconic Rock group Apparatjik? You get the mirrored two-seater shown above, as well as a rather odd video featuring enough flashing lights to push epileptics into DEFCON 1.

The electric party-mobile is a one-off creation thought up by the Apparatjik crew. It's a music group comprised of Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, A-Ha guitarist/keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, Mew lead singer Jonas Bjerre and producer Martin Terefe. The car will be used in a film called Pixel City. It also has a starring role in an Apparatjik music video, which can be seen after the jump. Just don't crash... that's a lot of mirrors ripe for a shattering.

The inRacingNews Challenge is now halfway complete, as the Pontiac Solstices and Spec Racer Fords of the multi-class series spent last week competed at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the one and only time this online racing season. While Chris Hughson (in Solstice) and Gabriel Tobar (in SRF) both held substantial points leads going into the week, both looked to even further extend their respective advantages. While Tobar succeeded, building his advantage over dual title threat Hughson to 164 in SRF (994-830), Hughson saw his lead over Nenad Matijevic in Solstice drop to 90 points, and now sits at 937-847. Solstice remains the class with the bigger championship leads in the lower divisions, as Moreno Bertani holds a 60-marker advantage over William R Randleman in Division Two, Wim Bries is running [...]

Detroit News auto critic resigns. Was it because paper bowed to advertiser pressure?

Detroit News Headquarters

Auto critic Scott Burgess has reportedly resigned his post at The Detroit News effective immediately. The well-respected scribe gave no reason for his sudden departure from the paper, but Jalopnik is citing unnamed sources who claim the writer's departure was spurred on by the unthinkable; a review that was neutered to appease an unnamed advertiser that wasn't Chrysler.

The review in question was for the Chrysler 200, which has been substantially updated (apparently not enough) for 2011. Yes, the same 200 that was featured in the excellent "Imported from Detroit" ad that Chrysler spent millions on to air during the Super Bowl, and the same vehicle that is essentially a reworked Sebring.

We don't have an official account detailing why Burgess called it quits, but the following facts are cut and dry. In the original review, which hit newsstands last week Thursday, Burgess called the 200 "a dog," adding "If this is the best vehicle Detroit exports, then Glenn Beck is right." Nice zinger, but unfortunately it didn't make its way to the online version of the review. The online version of the review was clearly diluted at least seven times (you can see all the editorial deletes/rewrites on Jalopnik), taking the edge off of an otherwise scathing account that paints the 200 as coming up short against the midsize competition.

While The Detroit News hasn't admitted to any inappropriate behavior and the advertiser in question is still unknown, evidence points to this whole thing stinking to high hell. If this turns out to be true then we tip our hat to Mr. Burgess for standing up for what he believes in, and for Jalopnik for bringing this to light.
