Renault fined for communication error
Renault's misery in the Singapore Grand Prix was compounded on Sunday when the team was fined 7,500 Euros for giving Bruno Senna wrong instructions at a safety car restart. Jenson Button said he was frustrated by backmarkers as he tried to chase down Sebastian Vettel at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix. The McLaren driver was caught behind traffic when the race restarted after the safety car, then encountered a battling group in the closing stages as well while gaining on Vettel. Report: Maybach and Aston Martin alliance talks fall apart

If you have, like us, been salivating at the notion of a new generation of Maybach and Lagonda ultra-luxury crafts built by Aston Martin, we've got some bad news: According to reports emanating from Germany, talks between AML and Daimler have broken down.
The proposal under negotiation would have seen Daimler outsourcing production of the next family of Maybach models to Aston Martin, which in return would benefit from Mercedes-Benz platforms and engines - not only for its svelte GTs, but also for its own future Lagonda line of limousines and luxury SUVs. That, and a boatload of money - or at least that's what AML was reportedly seeking, an issue that served as the stumbling block over which the deal reportedly collapsed.
That's not to say the two parties couldn't still reach some sort of a compromise, but short of that, Daimler may opt to either shut down Maybach altogether, find another partner, or take another stab at building new models internally.

Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn has called for a clarification of Formula 1's curfew regulations, after his team was one of three outfits caught out when marketing staff entered the track early at the Singapore Grand Prix. The Brackley-based outfit joined Red Bull Racing and Virgin Racing in using up one of its four allowable curfews when it was discovered that marketing staff from the three outfits entered the circuit the track during a prohibited time.

Lewis Hamilton must brace himself for a harder tyre strategy call in the Singapore Grand Prix after a push by his McLaren team to get a replacement super soft for the one he punctured in qualifying was rejected by the FIA. The McLaren driver punctured his right rear tyre during a run right at the end of Q2 - with it being suspected that the damage was caused when he ran over debris following Kamui Kobayashi's accident at the chicane. Drivers: Two-car drafts will continue
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers still expect two-car tandems to prevail in next month's Chase race at Talladega, despite organisers announcing technical changes this week in an attempt to hinder them. More horsepower through bigger holes in the restrictor plates and lower pressure on the relief valve of the cooling system are the two steps NASCAR has taken towards trying to limit the new style of racing that has ruled at Daytona and Talladega this year. While marginally higher speeds are expected as a result, drivers seem to agree that there will not be a change in the way the race unfolds

Alonso pins hopes on tyre degradation
Fernando Alonso is optimistic that Ferrari's gentle tyre use could give the team the edge over Red Bull in race conditions despite being outpaced by Sebastian Vettel during Friday practice. The Spaniard, who was two tenths off Vettel, admitted that Red Bull looks strong based on today's running, but with tyre degradation expected to be high around the street track, he believes that this could prove to be Ferrari's trump card. Webber: Strong start key to 2012 hopes
Mark Webber believes he must hit the ground running at the start of 2012 if he is going to be able to take the fight to Sebastian Vettel next year. The Australian believes his title hopes this season faltered on the back of a poor opening part to the campaign, whereas Vettel won five of the opening six races. Triple 8 Engineering will remain in the British Touring Car Championship next year with a car built to the series' NGTC technical regulations. The team, which took its first win of the season courtesy of James Nash at Rockingham last weekend, has not confirmed which car it will build, but did pledge its future to the tin-top series. Atkinson returns to Proton IRC squad
Chris Atkinson will return to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with the Proton team on next week's Sanremo Rally, replacing P-G Andersson for the Malaysian manufacturer. You already know that the Chevrolet Spark is destined for U.S. soil. Now, however, comes word that General Motors plans to give the subcompact hatchback a light facelift before it arrives. The version you see above will get slightly refreshed mug before it shows up in your local dealer's showroom.
Originally slated to be a 2012 model, the reworked Spark is now expected to arrive in the middle of 2012 for the 2013 model year. GM Inside News reports that The General will bring the car Stateside with a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, which can be paired with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual gearbox (each down a gear from where they should be, sadly). Either combination should be able to hit 40 miles per gallon in a combination of highway and city driving.

Frankfurt: Volkswagen on the rise with a variety of Up! concepts [w/video]

Volkswagen is eager to show off its new Up! range, so the automaker didn't bring one version of the compact to the Frankfurt Motor Show - it brought six. The Up! platform is clearly a versatile one, and all six Up! concepts on display attest to that fact. Volkswagen has an Up! for people who enjoy a day spent sailing on the water to those who prefer their adventures to be of the urban variety.
The six concept Up! varieties are the Buggy Up! (shown above), Up! Azzurra, Cross Up!, GT Up!, Eco Up! and e-Up! The Buggy and Azzurra are designed for those who want to get close to the ocean. The Buggy is clearly a modern take on the classic VW-based kit cars from the 1960s. It's a modern Meyers Manx, or perhaps a riff on the old VW Thing. The Azzurra, on the other hand, also likes the beach but prefers to stay dockside while its occupants take to the sea. Penned by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and VW design boss Walter de Silva, the Up! Azzurra is a roofless, doorless summer time cruiser that's the perfect land toy for boat lovers.
Volkswagen couldn't go completely doorless with the Up! family, so a few had to cover up will remaining fun. The Cross Up! is a four-door example that applies lifted CUV dynamics to the Up! platform. Those seeking a more enthusiastic driving experience should turn their attention to the GT Up! concept. VW estimates it can push the standard 74-horsepower Up! engine to produce 100 horses for the GT version. Add in the 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and upgraded exhaust, and you have a sporty Up! designed to add a thrill to your morning commute.
Since the Up! is an affordable compact designed for life in the city, you would expect Volkswagen to add a few versions that up the green quotient. The automaker has done just that with the e-Up! and Eco Up! The "e" in the name of the former alludes to the fact that this vehicle is an all-electric city car with no emissions spewing out the back. Power is provided by an 18 kWh battery pack, which will allow the e Up! to go 80 miles on a single charge. The Eco Up! needs fuel to get going, but it eschews traditional gasoline for natural gas, a start/stop system and brake regeneration. A 1-liter three-cylinder engine produces 67 horsepower and, when coupled with the BlueMotion start/stop system, achieves a combined fuel consumption figure of just 2.5kg/100km.

Renault has set a mid-October deadline for keeping a seat open for Robert Kubica next year, with the team keen to know its 2012 driver line-up as soon as possible. Vettel on top after final practice
Sebastian Vettel proved that Red Bull will be a contender for its 13th pole position of the season by topping the times during the final free practice session ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. The world championship leader banged in a lap of 1m23.170s on the third lap of a run on options to knock team-mate Mark Webber off the top of the timesheets by 0.364s. Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton showed that Ferrari and McLaren have some work to do if they are to challenge for pole after ending up 0.498s and 0.571s off Vettel following their qualifying simulations, although with Alonso down in eighth place, almost one second off, there is a suspicion that there is more to come from Ferrari.

Toyota has announced that it will unveil its first-ever kei car to be sold under its recently launched Pixis sub-brand. The vehicle, called the Pixis Space, will make its official debut in late September. Based on the Daihatsu Move Conte, the Pixis Space will be sold at Toyota dealerships through what the automakers calls "Pixis stations." Yes, seriously.
After Toyota's version of the Daihatsu Move Conte makes its debut, the Japanese automaker will launch a Pixis-badged Daihatsu Hijet truck and microvan in December. By the end of 2012, Toyota says it will launch a Pixis version of the upcoming Daihatsu e:S - a vehicle that returns 70.6 miles per gallon (U.S.) as measured under Japan's JC08 test cycle.
In case you weren't aware, Daihatsu - Japan's oldest manufacturer of automobiles - operates under the control of Toyota. In other words, these Pixis machines are simply badge engineering at the kei level.
