Loix clinches Ypres victory

Freddy Loix won the Ypres Rally for the seventh time in his career with a dominant performance on his home round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The Belgian veteran was barely threatened throughout the two-day event, pulling clear of early rival Guy Wilks with a string of stage wins on Friday, and ultimately winning by over one and a half minutes as problems hit all the other main contenders. The result put Loix into the IRC championship lead, with pre-rally points leader Juho Hanninen not entered for this event.

Horner hopes Webber can match Vettel

Red Bull Racing is hopeful that Mark Webber can get himself into a position now to challenge Sebastian Vettel regularly for race victories, on the back of his strong showing in the European Grand Prix. Webber has struggled in the opening phase of the campaign to get the most out of Pirelli's new tyres - and the only time he has beaten Vettel in qualifying was at the Spanish GP when his team-mate's pace was hindered by a lack of KERS. However, Webber appeared to make a breakthrough in Valencia last weekend.

Alonso: Second shows Ferrari closing

Fernando Alonso described splitting the Red Bulls in the European Grand Prix as a 'great achievement' for Ferrari, and evidence that the team is getting much closer to winning. Alonso moved up to third at the start and had a race-long battle with Mark Webber's Red Bull - passing it on track in the second stint, falling behind again at the second pitstops, and then finally taking the place for good during the final pit sequence. "It was an interesting race for the fans and people on TV, to see the fight with Webber all the race through," said Alonso

Report: Supplier strike could potentially affect Chevy Sonic launch [UPDATE]

2012 Chevrolet Sonic - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Chevrolet Sonic is set to being production in August, but Automotive News reports that a supplier issue could affect the launch's timing. LINC Logistics Co., which employs about 125 workers at the Orion assembly plant that will build the Sonic, is struggling to come to an agreement with employees at the facility. The LINC workers recently agreed to join the United Auto Workers, and now the blue collar bunch is looking for more money than the reported average of about $10 per hour. UAW workers employed by General Motors commonly make between $14 and $28 per hour.

Since the UAW and LINC have yet to agree to a contract, the workers on Wednesday took a strike authorization vote. If the vote passes, the workers - who perform logistics and parts sequencing duties - could potentially disrupt production.

While a strike would most certainly be an unwelcome turn of events for The General, AN reports that GM spokesperson Kim Carpenter says the automaker doesn't anticipate that the issue will affect the Sonic launch.

UPDATE: According to a new report from Automotive News, Orion Assembly Plant workers voted to authorize a strike, meaning union leaders can call for a work stoppage during negotiations. Of the 88 workers who voted, 98 percent of them were in favor of authorizing a strike. GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter says that the automaker still does not expect this strike to affect the Sonic launch.

Koch-Funded ?Scholar? O?Toole: Seniors Love Car Dependence

If there’s one thing we can learn from Randal O’Toole of the Cato Institute, the think-tank co-founded by climate change denier and fossil fuel industry billionaire Charles Koch, it’s that the little guy in America is tired being pushed around by Big Transit.

Mini driver Daniel Oliveira has endured the toughest morning of his rally career after the powersteering failed on his John Cooper Works WRC early on today's leg. The Brazilian hit trouble on the morning's opening stage, but he battled through the remainder of Klenia Mycenae and the next two tests before returning the car to Loutraki for service. Alfalla Again

For the second week in a row, Ray Alfalla put his name on the top of the leader board in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series. This week the series shifted gears from the “Tricky Triangle” of Pocono Raceway, to the “Great American Speedway” in Forth Worth, Texas — Texas Motor Speedway. Alfalla only did one race, in contrast to his half dozen at Pocono the previous week, but that is all he needed to stamp himself firmly at the top for the week. Fellow NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship sim racer Thomas Lewandowski finished second in points, fifteen markers behind the surging Alfalla. Rafael Doninelli and Charles Cosper tied for the most wins on the week with three a piece, six other drivers had two. Gabriel Solis and Alvin [...]

Horner relaxed about Vettel?s error

Sebastian Vettel should not be too disappointed with the last-lap error that cost him victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, says his team boss Christian Horner. The Red Bull Racing driver had looked on course to deliver his sixth win of the campaign in Montreal but, under pressure from a hard-charging Jenson Button, he made a mistake on the final lap and slid wide - handing the win to his McLaren rival. Although Vettel himself was gutted at having thrown away the victory, Horner says that he has no complaints about his young German's driving ? and praised his brilliance in the tricky conditions.

Ferrari: Still too early to rule out title

Ferrari says it will reserve judgement on its chances of winning the world championship this year until after the British Grand Prix - even though it thinks it may need a 'Lourdes' miracle to pull off the type of win that Jenson Button delivered in Canada. The Maranello-based outfit had high hopes of a strong result in Montreal, after Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa qualified second and third, but incidents in the race meant they lost even more ground to points leader Sebastian Vettel. And although conceding that the world title fight is now looking difficult ? with Alonso 92 points adrift of Vettel in the standings ? team principal Stefano Domenicali wants to wait another two races before making a call on Ferrari's 2011 ambitions

Edwards thanks doctors after podium

Colin Edwards paid tribute to the medical team that looked after him in the wake of his Catalunya crash after finishing on the podium at Silverstone despite breaking his collarbone just a week earlier. The American sustained the injury in Friday practice in Spain, had surgery on the Saturday, yet felt fit enough to try and race on the Sunday - though he only intended to take the start to maintain his unbroken run of MotoGP appearances, and would have retired early. He never had any doubts about racing at Silverstone this weekend, and after a cautious performance in practice, Edwards qualified eighth, swiftly moved up to fifth in the wet race, then grabbed the podium after Jorge Lorenzo and Marco Simoncelli crashed out.

Ullrich: Risky tyre strategy right call

Audi Sport boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich has described the thinking behind the risky tyre strategy which ultimately enabled the marque to claim its 10th Le Mans win. "Our Peugeot rivals were as strong as ever, with four cars against us," said Ullrich.
