Loix clinches Ypres victory
Freddy Loix won the Ypres Rally for the seventh time in his career with a dominant performance on his home round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The Belgian veteran was barely threatened throughout the two-day event, pulling clear of early rival Guy Wilks with a string of stage wins on Friday, and ultimately winning by over one and a half minutes as problems hit all the other main contenders. The result put Loix into the IRC championship lead, with pre-rally points leader Juho Hanninen not entered for this event.
Heidfeld left hoping for more after 10th
Nick Heidfeld said he was hoping for more in the European Grand Prix after finishing in a distant 10th place. The German driver finished a lap down after a poor start, having been unable to pass the Force India of Adrian Sutil. Horner hopes Webber can match Vettel
Red Bull Racing is hopeful that Mark Webber can get himself into a position now to challenge Sebastian Vettel regularly for race victories, on the back of his strong showing in the European Grand Prix. Webber has struggled in the opening phase of the campaign to get the most out of Pirelli's new tyres - and the only time he has beaten Vettel in qualifying was at the Spanish GP when his team-mate's pace was hindered by a lack of KERS. However, Webber appeared to make a breakthrough in Valencia last weekend.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both called for the team to find more downforce on the car as soon as possible after they took disappointing fourth and sixth places in Valencia. Report: Supplier strike could potentially affect Chevy Sonic launch [UPDATE]

The Chevrolet Sonic is set to being production in August, but Automotive News reports that a supplier issue could affect the launch's timing. LINC Logistics Co., which employs about 125 workers at the Orion assembly plant that will build the Sonic, is struggling to come to an agreement with employees at the facility. The LINC workers recently agreed to join the United Auto Workers, and now the blue collar bunch is looking for more money than the reported average of about $10 per hour. UAW workers employed by General Motors commonly make between $14 and $28 per hour.
Since the UAW and LINC have yet to agree to a contract, the workers on Wednesday took a strike authorization vote. If the vote passes, the workers - who perform logistics and parts sequencing duties - could potentially disrupt production.
While a strike would most certainly be an unwelcome turn of events for The General, AN reports that GM spokesperson Kim Carpenter says the automaker doesn't anticipate that the issue will affect the Sonic launch.
UPDATE: According to a new report from Automotive News, Orion Assembly Plant workers voted to authorize a strike, meaning union leaders can call for a work stoppage during negotiations. Of the 88 workers who voted, 98 percent of them were in favor of authorizing a strike. GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter says that the automaker still does not expect this strike to affect the Sonic launch.

BMWs, SEATs get weight break
Drivers of BMW and SEAT machinery have been given weight reductions for the next round of the World Touring Car Championship at Porto. BMWs were given a 30kg weight increase for the previous round at Brno based on the compensation weight system that balances performance based on lap times over the past two rounds. The 320TC which is fielded by the ROAL, Proteam, Zengo-Dension and Weichers-Sport teams, has been given 10kg back, but remains the heaviest car in the field at 1200kg.

Sebastian Vettel should not be too disappointed with the last-lap error that cost him victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, says his team boss Christian Horner. Ferrari says it will reserve judgement on its chances of winning the world championship this year until after the British Grand Prix - even though it thinks it may need a 'Lourdes' miracle to pull off the type of win that Jenson Button delivered in Canada. During an ultimately difficult event for Hamilton, who had gone into the Montreal grand prix as favourite for victory but suffered a troubled qualifying and an early exit from the race, fresh speculation emerged about what he intends to do after his current contract ends in 2012. AUTOSPORT can reveal that Hamilton met for private talks with Red Bull Racing chief Christian Horner at the team's office buildings on Saturday evening - where the two spent at least 15 minutes together chatting in private.

Edwards thanks doctors after podium
Colin Edwards paid tribute to the medical team that looked after him in the wake of his Catalunya crash after finishing on the podium at Silverstone despite breaking his collarbone just a week earlier. The American sustained the injury in Friday practice in Spain, had surgery on the Saturday, yet felt fit enough to try and race on the Sunday - though he only intended to take the start to maintain his unbroken run of MotoGP appearances, and would have retired early. He never had any doubts about racing at Silverstone this weekend, and after a cautious performance in practice, Edwards qualified eighth, swiftly moved up to fifth in the wet race, then grabbed the podium after Jorge Lorenzo and Marco Simoncelli crashed out.

Graves Motorsport duo Tom Kimber-Smith and Olivier Lombard were elated with their performance in Le Mans, after their Zytek-Nissan dominated the LMP2 class to win by more than seven laps. Britain's Kimber-Smith, who first raced in Le Mans in 2007 with Panoz but hadn't been back since, insisted the team's strategy of a low-risk approach to the race had paid dividends.

Audi Sport boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich has described the thinking behind the risky tyre strategy which ultimately enabled the marque to claim its 10th Le Mans win. The victorious #2 Audi was tasked with doing two unprecedented five stint runs on a single set of tyres, which was deemed a necessary tactic to reduce its total pitstop time while Peugeot's chasing 908s were able to do at least one extra lap per stint. Jenson Button labelled his Canadian Grand Prix win as the best of his career after a sensational charge to beat Sebastian Vettel on the final lap. Button took the lead of the race with half a lap to go after Vettel lost control of his car when under pressure from the Briton. The McLaren driver finished first despite a crash with team-mate Lewis Hamilton and another with Fernando Alonso, and also despite a drive-through penalty for speeding behind the safety car that dropped him to last.

Crutchlow sets sights on front row
British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow says his aim for Silverstone qualifying tomorrow is to secure a front row start for his home grand prix. The World Superbike convert has been hugely impressive in qualifying throughout his maiden MotoGP season so far, and wants to achieve new heights in front of the British fans. Members of both clubs will compete in six short, shootout races at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Chevrolet Impala Class B – Nationwide) and Talladega Superspeedway (Chevy Silverados/Chevrolet Impala Class B – Nationwide), Lanier National Speedway (Street Stocks) and the road courses at Daytona International Speedway (Skip Barber F2000) and New Hampshire Motor Speedway (Mazda MX5s). World Championship drivers flooded into the Poconos and clustered at the top of the leader board, preparing for their NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship race at Pocono Raceway the following week.
